- pins 8 and 7. Pin 8 puts out 5 volts on C128's and 64c's. I put a lot of

- Issue 5 is due to mail from our mailing house tomorrow. They were supposed to
- go today, but there was some problem with the bar-codes on the labels. Sorry
- to be so late, but we ran a couple of weeks late on editing and got completely
- caught by the holidays with getting the issue printed.
-
- Issue 6 is in final edit now, and contains a feature on word processing.
- There's a sub-feature on page layout; Jim Butterfield's column talks about
- producing better-looking output; Jim Brain stands in as guest columnist for
- Carrier Detect with a compressed history of the Internet; SOFTWARE IN REVIEW
- takes a look at whole bunch of dedicated database programs for doing things
- like organizing your tapes and records, mailing lists, and others from CPI
- (maker's of Leroy's Cheat Sheets); Steve Vander Ark ponders why he'd rather
- still use GEOS than use his MS-DOS machine; Starship Combat gets the final
- wrap-up; John Leeson guests in Advanced Techniques to talk about coding
- adventure games; Hard Tips shows how to make pretty much any monitor cable you
- might need for a Commodore... There's more in this issue, but it's hard to
- remember everything without having the breakdown in front of me (which I don't
- at the moment).
-
- The feature planned for Issue 7 has to do with transferring files between
- platforms. This can always change, but I believe we'll be sticking with that
- theme. Assignments for open pages for Issue 7 won't go out until the end of
- this week, and we still have a planning meeting to go before it's finalized.
- We should also be seeing Cliff Dugan turn up in Issue 7. Cliff is the author
- of A64, which is a popular 64 emulator for the Amiga. We're also talking with
- Jim Butterfield about bringing his ML column to Commodore World, but that
- depends a little on what happens with the remains of Compute's Gazette.
-
- I guess I migt have skipped a couple of other things of interest that are
- coming in Issue 6. But then, I can't give EVERYTHING away, can I?

- I'm sure Howie knows it's a disk based magazine. This is straight from Tom
- Netsel, who called me about a week before Christmas with the news that they
- would ship their last issue in January. Mailings often take weeks to reach
- people, and Gazette probably doesn't even do the mailings themselves (this is

- mailings still ongoing just because someone hasn't informed whoever does the

- You're right about 2nd Class Mail and the way it is handled. A friend of mine
- used 2nd class to mail his promotional material to his clients. Once after a
- couple of month had passed, he kept wondering why clients and potential
- clients never responded to the material he sent out. Well, after he had the
- postal service trace the mailings, he found them being held up at a post
- office out in the boondocks and the postal workers there forgot to relay them
- on like they were supposed to. This really ticked him off and after that he
- sent his stuff 1st Class and passed the cost on to his customers.
-
- It is for this reason that my newspaper company send our subscriptions via 1st
- Class instead of 2nd Class. We have found out that many relay stations along
- the way just sit 2nd Class mail on the side when their volume of mail gets
- very heavy. And the post office's attitude about it is: "If you don't like it,

- As a former PO employee I feel that the US Post Office should only
- handle first class mail. Maybe they can do that right and operate in the

- This country has very few places that cannot get mail by anyother

- Getting back to the Issue #5 Genesis pad hack, I have been using Genesis-
- compatible controllers in Port 2 for years with no problems, based on a tip I
- saw in one of the mags (Run?). Only Port 1 causes problems, from what I can
- see but I would be interested in any serious problems you see with this, Doug.
- Looking over your schematic in Issue 5, I note the POTY (5) pin on the 64
- lines up with +5VDC pin on the Genesis pad, while the 64's +5VDC pin lines up
- with the Genesis' SELECT pin. The grounds are common, though. While I have

- What you're doing without the mods is feeding the +5 to the controller via the
- select line, which might cause eventual damage to te chip in the controller.
- Hard to determine that, since these are custom chips, but we felt it would be
- better to feed it +5 where it expects it. Also, the chip pulls the I/O lines
- for the C64 high when they really shouldn't be. There may be enough current
